Sydney has many theatres which show a wide range of productions ranging from Shakespearean plays to lavish musicals and cutting-edge contemporary works. The Sydney Opera House is the jewel in the crown of the city's performing arts scene and is home to three main theatres; while other notable venues include the Wharf, Belvoir Street and the State and Ensemble theatres.

Live music can be found at pubs and hotels throughout Sydney. Selina's attracts top names in rock music and the Bridge Hotel, The Annandale and Strawberry Fields Hotel are also popular live music venues. Australia has a successful legacy of producing world class bands with such as small population and much of this is because of the local network for supporting up-and-coming bands. Kings Cross and Oxford street are two areas where underground music thrives in mars, clubs and venues. The city also has a popular dance scene.

The Manly International Jazz Festival is held each October and the Big Day Out pop festival comes to Sydney in the summer, attracting international acts.
